Graduate Training
The Department
of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine offers a graduate
program in Experimental Pathology. Application to this program
is through the School
of Biological Sciences, which offers a multidisciplinary
graduate program under the general heading of Cellular and Molecular
Biosciences (CMB). Members
of the Pathology faculty participate in this program. The
program includes one year of intensive academic instruction
in biochemistry, genetics, and molecular biology and an opportunity
to rotate through two or more research laboratories. In addition,
students may select a specific area of interest from ten
separate areas of academic study. One of the ten areas of
study, or tracks, is Experimental
Pathology. This track emphasizes experimental approaches
to better understand the molecular and cellular mechanisms
of disease. Affiliation with tracks applies to the first
two years of graduate study. After the first year, students
interested in Experimental Pathology join the laboratories
of faculty within the department or the laboratories of affiliated
faculty. Following successful completion of the curriculum and
research leading to a dissertation thesis, students receive
a Ph.D. in the Biological Sciences with a concentration in
Experimental Pathology.
