Welcome to one of the hubs of the UC Irvine Health enterprise, the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine.
As the natural bridge between basic science and clinical medicine, our department provides the laboratory foundation for the UC Irvine Health missions: Discover. Teach. Heal.
Discover: Research programs led by our pathologists and affiliates span the areas of cancer, infectious disease, stress-related injury, immunologic disorders, development, neurodegeneration and stem cell biology. Our faculty members provide leadership in national organizations and across the UC Irvine campus in numerous research institutes, centers, and core facilities and provide the resources that enable UC Irvine scientists to directly study healthy and diseased tissues from patients.
Teach: Our department is unique in having training programs for medical residents (in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology) and PhD students (in Experimental Pathology).
Our award-winning teaching program is directed at medical students as well as at technicians training in Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) and Phlebotomy.
Heal: Pathologists are commonly referred to as the “Doctor’s Doctor.” Our faculty physicians consult with other UC Irvine Health physicians and doctors throughout Southern California, providing critical information for the diagnosis and treatment of patients. We also are developing new tests and services, including many that will take us into the next generation of personalized “precision” medicine.
