Ophthalmic pathology is concerned with the diagnosis of cytological and tissue specimens from the eye and orbit. Our physicians process and interpret surgical, cytology and autopsy specimens, with special interest in ocular and orbital lesions including lacrimal gland neoplasms and fine-needle aspiration of tumors in the eye and orbital socket.
Services are available in the following areas:
- Consultation services for problematic and unusual cases
- Resection and biopsy reviews
- Biopsies from the eye and eyelids
- Cytologic specimens from the eye and orbit, including fine-needle aspiration
- Consultation services for examination of enucleation and exenteration specimens
Educational opportunities include:
- Residency training
- Conferences bi-weekly at UC Irvine Medical Center or Gavin Herbert Eye Institute
Research
- Application of molecular diagnostics in neoplasms of the ocular surface and periocular region
- Analysis of the pathogenesis of melanocytic lesions of the conjunctiva
- Mechanisms involved in infectious diseases of the eye and ocular adnexal structures
- UV-related lesions of the ocular surface
