Renal pathology handles a large volume of diagnostic renal biopsies. Expertise is available for handling fresh biopsy specimens at UC Irvine as well as consultation material from referring institutions. The section is also expert in interpretation of renal transplant biopsies, and in the evaluation of post-transplantation complications including lymphoproliferative disorders. This service is professionally supported by Renal Pathology of UCLA.

- Preliminary light microscopic diagnosis in two working days if call back number is provided.

Specimen requirements (consultation biopsies):
* New biopsies (obtain procurement kits prior to biopsy)
- Two 18-gauge core biopsies of renal cortex fixed in alcoholic Bouin solution
- One core in glutaraldehyde solution
- One core in Zeus solution
- Complete clinical history
- Surgical pathology form
- Billing information
* Previous biopsies
- All slides and electron micrographs (if available)
- Surgical pathology report, clinical history and billing information
