Surgical Pathology

Surgical pathology plays a vital role in the care of patients at UC Irvine Medical Center. It involves the gross and microscopic examination of surgical specimens, cytology and biopsies submitted by surgical specialties, internal medicine, dermatology, neurology, radiology and medical oncology. Surgical pathology is the basis for diagnosis either intra-operatively or following surgery. The surgical pathologist is called to advise the clinician about the correct diagnosis, appropriate therapy and prognosis.

Services are available in the following areas:

  • Consultation services for problematic and unusual case specimens, pre-operative review before major surgery
  • Immunohistochemistry
  • Rapid diagnosis of biopsy specimens
  • Tumor grade and staging
  • Frozen section diagnosis
  • Fine-needle aspiration on-site evaluation for puluf ERUS and GIEUS
  • Molecular studies for malignancies breast cancer
  • Electron microscopy
