Transfusion medicine is involved in all aspects of blood component therapy—from donor recruitment, selection and collection to donor testing, product manufacture, and therapeutic apheresis. Our medical directorship is engaged in setting guidelines and providing recommendations on evidence-based hemotherapy decisions.
Our physicians provide direct patient care on a consultative basis and are engaged in the evaluation and management of patients with transfusion reactions, platelet refractoriness and those in whom therapeutic apheresis is indicated, as well as patients requiring specialized component therapy or transfusion alternatives.
Our division oversees collection activities at two, donor centers and a mobile collection unit that together collect more than 20,000 red blood cell, plasma and apheresis platelet units annually.
